"…a time when no one dared speak…."

This is the damning conclusion of an opinion piece published in the Deccan Herald, on April 07, 2023, regarding the changes, some expected, some not so much, in fact, surreptitious, made in the NCERT supervised national high school syllabus.

There are some startling similarities to the practices instituted in Germany in the 1930s, after the democratic process took a turn, eradicating effective opposition in the national parliament (Reichstag). As explained in this account,

The result of that restructuring of that change in the information available to schoolchildren was arresting. By the time they attained adulthood, the nation was at war, and most of the young men were frontline soldiers, enforcing the colonisation of most of mainland Europe, together with parts of North Africa and Central Asia.

Some of them, however, were prison guards, assisting in one of the modern world’s most targeted eradication programs of mass murder, that has become known as The Holocaust

The Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana noted, Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it..

For the people of India, remembering the past, particularly the recent past, is growing ever more urgent, certainly far more urgent than re-imagining a distant epic as history.
